Hi Everyone,
My name is Julie and I am the natural mother of 3 boys with autism. I realize I am much more than that, but right now ~ that's the most defining thing about me :-) I am divorced... but we did manage to buck the odds for years as the divorce rate with one autistic child is close to 90% ~ we managed to make it 10 years with an amicable divorce.

Evan turned 21 on Christmas Eve, 2014 and has Asperger's Syndrome. We work diligently to inject a little more humanity and empathy into Evan on an almost daily basis. He has come a long way and I am extremely proud of him. On Dec 11, 2010, he graduated from an alternative military high school enabling him to essentially skip 10th-12th grades and he is now working his dream job with animals just a mile from home. We encountered another bump in the road at a well-child check up - one finger prick and a blood glucose reading of close to 600 and we now are dealing with Type 1 Diabetes as well. Upwards of 4 insulin injections per day and 5+ BG checks – including one at 3am - our lives have certainly changed. :-)

Travis is 18, soon to be 19 and has mild autism and is language impaired. He is my very literal child, however - not really understanding euphemisms, idioms, or common colloquial language - and provides most of the humor in our lives.

Oliver is 23 as of August, 2014. He has never spoken and is considered profoundly autistic. He is my most obedient child at the moment as puberty proved to be an interesting challenge for his brothers and me. Oliver, however, does not live with us. After that very amicable divorce in 2001, I made the heart-wrenching decision to accept the offer from an outstanding special needs corporation opening a few private group homes in our area at the time. Oliver went in before his ninth birthday and just around the time Travis decided to speak his first words. Ironically, Travis' voice instigated some self-injurious behavior in Oliver. However, when Evan had started talking at five, Oliver took it in stride... not so with Travis, his voice seemed to irritate to the point that even Evan was saying "hush Travis" to help calm Oliver.

I thank God every day for every word. Each of my children was diagnosed between the ages of two and a half and 3. I was told after each exhaustive 3 hour 'study' that they would never talk or function in society and would need 24 hour care the rest of their lives.

God has been very good to me and given me a fairly level head. I spent the subsequent years researching; getting help from whichever agency offered and - after the boys were on med waivers for autism - read every bit of fine print to get whatever therapy was covered.

We were fortunate to find an excellent pediatrician who knew virtually nothing about autism at the time (no pre-conceived ideas or notions) and would wholeheartedly support and write referrals to the insurance company backing any therapy I came across that I chose to try ~ whether he thought it was nonsense or not :-)

Everything indeed worked out in God's infinite timing. I was able to teach school and eventually, in 2004, build a small house near Oliver that we thank God for every day.

God put wonderful people in our paths over the years or I would not be as sane as I am today!
